about Gobbets

A gobbet was ‘…a piece or fragment of anything that is divided, cut or broken…’ a globule….‘ a lump or mass…’ ‘..  a mouthful of food”,   (possibly of Gaelic origin); to gob refers to expectorating, spitting or hawking (Shorter Oxford Dictionary). A more elevated use refers to a short extract, text or image, used in classics exams. These, always, un-attributed quotations, by Greek and Roman authors, provided the occasion for commentary by Classics students in an exam situation.
