The poetry of silence

May 11th, 2011

I first came across the works of Danish painter, Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864 – 1916) at the exhibition, The poetry of silence, at The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, in 2008.

Interior. Strandgade 30, 1901

White Doors or Open Doors, 1905

Woman Reading in Sunlight, Strandgade 30, 1899

Interior with Ida Playing the Piano, 1910

Hammershøi was influenced by Vermeer and Rembrandt in his paintings of everyday interiors. The works are retrained in depicting everyday acts while suggesting narrative elements.
