I gave a lecture on ‘video art’ today and began by discussing the different sides of the medium specificity argument. Noel Carroll argues that it is when a technological medium sought to legitimise itself as as a valid art form (on par with more traditional arts of painting, sculture, print-making etc,), the medium specificity argument surfaces. I asked the students how useful are these terms that start with a medium and ends with the suffix ‘art’.
