Seasonal Almanac

Autumnal equinox began with a warm and humid day. We couldn’t resist a swim before heading to the Coledale markets. It was a very bright day. We bought some bread, a bunch of lillies on special, and a cake as a treat. I had my usual conversation with Mr Apple who gave me some delicious peaches with my apples. Redmond bought a jar of tomato chutney and a small jar of raspberry jam from the Jam Lady. I bought some lettuce seedlings from the plant store and we went home for some inspired gardening.

I let the chickens out in the garden and proceeded to make three more small patches of rocket, spinach, and mustard greens. I then planted the lettuces out in rows. Feeling quite pleased with myself I sat down and watched the chickens digging for bugs under the Mulberry tree. It was shady under the tree. I looked up and noticed that a couple of leaves turning yellow on its long branches.
