Limit of heat: rice ripens (4 of 5)

March 5th, 2009

Limit of heat 14 of 15For most people in Australia March is the beginning of Autumn. The minimum temperatures for yesterday and today dropped considerably. Whether it is a response to this cooler change or the public’s declaration that it’s now Autumn, I noticed more cardingans being worn and general shirtlessness has declined.

Redmond spotted a few small dead snakes amongst the leaf litter along the side of the road. The carcuses have long dried up and have been hollwed out by ants. They were Red-bellied black snakes (Pseudechis porphyriacus) that are native in the East coast of Australia. Their preferred habitats are near water sources and the species is common in both vegetated and urban areas. The snakes are most well-known for their poisonous venom and their unusual reproductive mechanism for giving birth to live young (up to 40!).
