Kintsugi (金継ぎ) is the Japanese practice of mending broken pottery. The method uses urushi (うるし), a type of poisonous tree sap, as the binding agent. Instead of hiding the fractures, the aim of kintsugi is to highlight them, artfully. A master mends poetically. more… »

The exhibition is installed in the Art Lounge of the Belconnen Art Centre. It consists of 6 x 15 inch LCD screens (digital photo frames) displaying 6 different moving image works. Louise created 3 screen works using hand-processed black and white super-8 films; and I created 3 works using video and animation.

This is a test piece for my part in the collaborative project with Louise Curham. The final work will be displayed on 3 separate 15-inch LCD screens (digital photo frames). The timing of events that occur on each screen is linked but their synchronization is to absolutely necessary in the exhibition. For this year’s christmas and new year cards, I experimented with some hand printing techniques recommended by Traci Bunkers in her book, Print and Stamp Lab: 52 Ideas for Handmade, Upcycled Print Tools. Some of her visuals can be a bit overwhelming but her suggestions on the house-hold and everday objects that can be used as printing tools quite clever. The results are not guaranteed but the mission of using all that is at hand without purchasing anything extra is compelling. more… »
